States and Municipal Debt

October 14, 2005 · Print · Email

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census every five years of all state and local governments, measuring statistics such as employment, budgets and debt. A wide range of information is tracked by the Census Bureau, including: total state lottery ticket sales and types (of lotteries); aid to states from the Federal government; bond ratings for city governments.

Think California has the most outstanding municipal debt? You’d be close, but not quite. The state with the most municipal debt is New York. Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota and Vermont had the lowest debt. and See chart 505 on page 16 of the U.S. Census Bureau statistical abstract, which provides the most recent available numbers with a state by state breakdown.
