States and Municipal Debt
The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census every five years of all state and local governments, measuring statistics such as employment, budgets and debt. A wide range of information is tracked by the Census Bureau, including: total state lottery ticket sales and types (of lotteries); aid to states from the Federal government; bond ratings for city governments.
Think California has the most outstanding municipal debt? Youd be close, but not quite. The state with the most municipal debt is New York.
